India Signals Openness to Easing Curbs on Wheat Product Exports

Officials will assess next season’s output to safeguard food security before any change.

Overview

  • Food Minister Pralhad Joshi told flour millers the government will positively consider requests to allow exports of flour and semolina, with food security remaining the priority.
  • He noted that any decision involves multiple ministries, and wheat flour shipments currently require advance import authorisation.
  • The discussion comes after an estimated record 117.5 million tonnes of wheat production in the 2024–25 crop year.
  • The Roller Flour Millers’ Federation of India sought phased liberalisation with a minimum 1 million tonnes of wheat products for export, along with GST cuts on consumer packs and milling machinery.
  • Industry representatives also requested a study on DDGS effects on cattle and proposed higher government buffer stocks to stabilize prices.
