India Sets V2V Road-Safety Push in Motion With Spectrum Nod, Mandate Targeted This Year

A DoT–MoRTH task force is drafting standards ahead of factory-fit units being required in new vehicles.

Overview

  • DoT has agreed in principle to allocate 30 MHz in the 5.875–5.905 GHz band for vehicle-to-vehicle communications.
  • MoRTH plans to require V2V on-board units in new vehicles within the year once standards are finalised, with retrofits to follow for older vehicles.
  • Estimated device cost is Rs 5,000–7,000, with OEMs working with the government on specifications and interoperability.
  • The government launched a Zero Fatality Districts programme covering 100 high-accident districts with a goal to cut deaths by 50% by 2030, in partnership with SafeLife Foundation.
  • Alongside V2V, the government outlined 61 proposed Motor Vehicles Act amendments for the Budget session and signalled a nationwide rollout of cashless trauma care for crash victims.
