India Sets First Standard for Testing Electric Farm Tractors

The voluntary code channels evaluations through approved institutes to build confidence in electric machinery.

Overview

  • IS 19262:2025, titled Electric Agricultural Tractors – Test Code, was released on December 24 by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi at Bharat Mandapam on National Consumer Day.
  • The standard defines uniform procedures to assess safety, reliability and performance, including PTO and drawbar power tests, belt and pulley checks, vibration measurement and component inspections.
  • It was drafted at the request of the Agriculture Ministry’s Mechanisation & Technology Division with input from manufacturers, testing agencies and research bodies.
  • The code adapts elements from IS 5994:2022 and relevant electric-vehicle standards for agricultural use, and it remains voluntary while informing future acceptance and conformity schemes.
  • BIS expects implementation through authorised testing institutes to support wider adoption and lower emissions, as ICRA separately lifted its FY2026 tractor wholesale growth forecast to 15–17% citing GST cuts, a strong monsoon and pre-TREM V purchases.
