India Sets Census 2027 Houselisting for April–September 2026 With Self-Enumeration Option

India’s first fully digital count will capture caste data, supported by a Rs 11,718 crore outlay.

Overview

  • A Home Ministry notification sets houselisting and housing census between April 1 and September 30, 2026, with each state choosing a 30-day window.
  • Residents will have a 15-day self-enumeration period immediately before house-to-house visits begin in their area.
  • Population Enumeration is scheduled for February 2027, using a reference date of 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027.
  • Ladakh and snow-bound parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will conduct Population Enumeration in September 2026 due to weather conditions.
  • Data collection will run through mobile apps with real-time CMMS monitoring, and caste details will be recorded electronically following Cabinet approval.
