Overview
- A Home Ministry notification sets houselisting and housing census between April 1 and September 30, 2026, with each state choosing a 30-day window.
- Residents will have a 15-day self-enumeration period immediately before house-to-house visits begin in their area.
- Population Enumeration is scheduled for February 2027, using a reference date of 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027.
- Ladakh and snow-bound parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will conduct Population Enumeration in September 2026 due to weather conditions.
- Data collection will run through mobile apps with real-time CMMS monitoring, and caste details will be recorded electronically following Cabinet approval.
