India Selected to Chair the Kimberley Process From January 2026

Officials say the term will prioritize digital certification to reinforce confidence in conflict-free rough diamonds.

Overview

  • The Kimberley Process Plenary selected India to lead the UN‑backed certification scheme, with India taking Vice Chair on December 25 before assuming the Chair on January 1.
  • This will be India’s third term at the helm, following previous chairships in 2008 and 2019.
  • India’s agenda includes stronger governance and compliance, digital certification and traceability, data‑driven transparency, and measures to bolster consumer trust.
  • The Kimberley Process is a tripartite system of governments, industry and civil society created to keep conflict diamonds out of legitimate trade under a certification scheme launched in 2003.
  • Participants in the scheme account for over 99% of global rough‑diamond trade, with the UAE handing over the chair as India begins its tenure.
