India Schedules Coimbatore Workshop on Human-Elephant Conflict for World Elephant Day

The initiative will engage 1.2 million schoolchildren nationwide through a Project Elephant awareness drive.

  • The Union Environment Ministry has slated a focused workshop on August 12 in Coimbatore to address rising human-elephant conflicts.
  • Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav will inaugurate the gathering alongside Minister of State Kriti Vardhan Singh and Tamil Nadu Forest Minister R. S. Rajakannappan.
  • Delegates from elephant range states, conservation experts, railways and forest departments will share mitigation strategies on habitat management and corridor upkeep.
  • As part of Project Elephant, the event will kick off a nationwide campaign enrolling nearly 12 lakh students from about 5,000 schools in conservation outreach.
  • Government figures show 2,869 fatalities from elephant attacks between 2019 and 2023, highlighting the urgency of strengthening coexistence measures.
