India Says It Repatriated 274 Fugitives From 36 Countries Since 2019

The government says legal reforms, a BHARATPOL digital network, stepped-up Interpol cooperation, satellite tracing and tighter asset rules shortened the time to locate and return fugitives.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs disclosed on Tuesday that 274 fugitive criminals were brought back to India from 36 countries between 2019 and July 2026.
  • The returned suspects include those wanted for murder and violent crime (62), sexual offences including POCSO (53), organised crime and extortion (42) and terrorism or anti‑national acts (17).
  • Yearly totals rose from single digits in 2019–2020 to a peak of 70 repatriations in 2025, with 45 returns reported for 2026 up to July, illustrating a sustained increase under the current drive.
  • The MHA reported a sharp rise in Interpol Red Corner Notices, with 182 issued so far in 2026, and said PMLA enforcement led to asset attachments of Rs 17,874 crore and restitutions totaling Rs 18,762 crore between 2019 and 2026.
  • Officials credit a mix of new laws, Operation Trishul’s satellite and digital tracing, the BHARATPOL information platform, a CBI global operations centre and a January 2026 Multi Agency Centre focus group for faster case preparation and overseas cooperation, which could speed prosecutions and reduce safe havens for criminal networks.
