India Rolls Out ‘Next Generation’ GST; Karnataka Launches Revised Socio‑Educational Survey

Both moves signal a shift toward simpler taxes and data‑driven welfare.

Overview

  • From 22 September, the GST structure compresses most goods into 5% and 18% slabs with a separate 40% rate for designated sin and super‑luxury items.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the nationwide rollout and said the revamp will cut household costs and boost investment and ease of doing business.
  • Major dairy cooperatives Amul (GCMMF) and Mother Dairy issued new price lists effective today, passing on lower GST to staples including milk, paneer, butter, ghee and ice cream.
  • Items moved into the 40% bracket include tobacco products, sugar‑sweetened and caffeinated carbonated drinks, fast food, high‑engine‑capacity vehicles, private jets, yachts and IPL match tickets.
  • Karnataka’s statewide socio‑educational survey runs 22 September–7 October to cover about 7 crore people, after the column listing Christian sub‑castes was removed; the Chief Minister said the Backward Classes Commission made the change as the BJP continues to oppose the exercise.
