India Rolls Out Fisheries Traceability Framework, Sets Rs 1 Lakh Crore Seafood Export Goal by 2030
The new digital traceability system is designed to meet tougher food-safety rules to unlock higher-value export opportunities.
Overview
- The Department of Fisheries released the National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture 2025 to create a centralized digital system for compliance, food safety, sustainability and market access.
- Alongside the framework, the government launched SOPs for mariculture, plans for smart and integrated fishing harbours, upgrades at marine landing centres, reservoir fisheries guidelines and a compendium of coastal aquaculture norms.
- Union ministers urged exporters to shift toward value-added products with stronger packaging, certification and branding while leveraging FTAs, with closer coordination through MPEDA.
- Officials reported fish production has doubled to 195 lakh tonnes over a decade, seafood export volume reached 16.85 lakh tonnes in FY 2024–25 and export value rose to Rs 62,408 crore, supported by Rs 38,572 crore in sector investments.
- The roadmap includes aiming for 30% of exports by 2030 to come from high-value and value-added products, with the World Fisheries Day event drawing participation from 19 embassies and international bodies.
