India Revokes Approval for 11 Animal-Derived Biostimulants Citing Ethical Concerns

ICAR says marketing will remain on hold until pre-harvest interval data for foliar sprays are produced.

Overview

  • A September 30 notification from the Union Agriculture Ministry omitted 11 protein-hydrolysate entries from Schedule VI of the Fertiliser Control Order.
  • The delisted formulations draw on sources such as bovine hide, chicken feathers, pig tissue, cod skin and scales, and sardine.
  • ICAR Director-General Mangi Lal Jat said permissions are withheld pending proper pre-harvest interval data for foliar application.
  • These entries had been cleared earlier in 2025 for crops including paddy, tomato, chilli, cucumber, potato, soybean, grapes, cotton and green gram.
  • The step aligns with a broader cleanup that has cut available biostimulant products to about 650 in a market valued at US$355.53 million in 2024 and projected to reach roughly US$1.14 billion by 2032.
