India Revamps Anaemia Programme With 7x7x7 Lifecycle Strategy

The new guidelines shift the focus from mass supplementation to targeted testing, clinical care including intravenous iron, diet-based prevention, digital beneficiary tracking, case-based follow-up.

Overview

  • The Health Ministry released the operational guidelines Monday, renaming the scheme Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and replacing the earlier 6x6x6 model with a 7x7x7 framework to cover the life course.
  • The revised framework adds low-birth-weight infants (0–6 months) as a new beneficiary group, introduces an ‘Eating Right’ dietary intervention, and strengthens monitoring and evaluation.
  • Service delivery moves from T3 (Test, Treat, Talk) to T4 (Test, Treat, Talk, Track) to ensure haemoglobin testing is linked to treatment, referrals and systematic follow-up.
  • Clinical protocols now include intravenous iron therapy using Ferric Carboxymaltose and Iron Sucrose for pregnant and lactating women with severe anaemia or those who do not respond to oral iron.
  • The ministry plans an integrated digital ecosystem that will map pregnant women’s haemoglobin data via JANANI and children’s data via RBSK and U-WIN into a unified AMB Abhiyaan Portal for real-time tracking, with state rollout and implementation the next steps.
