Overview

  • NCRB data show 6,516 dowry deaths in 2022, a figure more than 25 times the number of women killed following rape or gang rape that year.
  • From 2020 to 2022, India recorded 19,882 dowry deaths, with government figures indicating an average of 18 such deaths reported daily.
  • Uttar Pradesh led with 2,218 cases in 2022 and, along with Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, accounted for nearly half of the national total over the three-year period.
  • Case backlogs remain severe, with 60,577 dowry-death cases pending at the end of 2022, a 33% conviction rate in cases completed that year, and just 99 convictions among 6,161 new cases sent for trial.
  • A recent Greater Noida death of 26-year-old Nikki Bhati, allegedly set ablaze over dowry, has intensified focus as the NCRB also logged 13,641 women as dowry-harassment victims in 2022.
