India Renews 5-Year Ban on NSCN(K) Under UAPA, Effective September 28

The Home Ministry cites the group's push for a sovereign Nagaland as the basis for continued proscription.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs declared NSCN(K) and all its factions, wings and front organisations an unlawful association for five years from September 28, 2025, invoking Section 3 of the UAPA.
  • The order is issued under the proviso to Section 3(3) and will operate subject to any order under Section 4 of the Act.
  • The government says the outfit seeks to carve a sovereign Nagaland across Indo‑Myanmar areas and has aligned with ULFA(I), PREPAK and PLA while securing help from anti‑India elements abroad.
  • Officials attribute kidnappings for ransom, extortion and illegal arms possession to the group, and report recoveries including 69 weapons, 52 magazines, 931 live rounds, 10 grenades and other explosives.
  • An MHA summary lists 71 cases, 56 charge sheets, 85 arrests, 69 surrenders and 13 cadre deaths since 2020, with Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh backing the move, which runs until September 28, 2030 unless modified.
