India Releases NIRF 2025 Rankings, IIT Madras Leads Overall as Sustainability Debuts

The 10th edition debuts sustainability metrics with modest penalties for retracted research.

  • The framework expanded to 17 categories with a new SDG/Sustainability ranking, where IIT Madras ranked first, according to the official lists.
  • NIRF 2025 introduced negative marking under Research and Professional Practice for retracted or flawed papers, applied as a small deduction this year with stronger penalties signalled in future cycles.
  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the results at Bharat Mandapam after an earlier court stay delayed publication over transparency concerns.
