India Records 4.80 Lakh Road Crashes in 2023, 1.73 Lakh Dead, MoRTH Says

The report identifies behavioral risks as the primary drivers of fatalities.

  • Total crashes rose 4.2% from 2022 and fatal accidents increased to 1,60,509, with an average of 20 deaths every hour.
  • Overspeeding was cited in roughly 68% of reported crashes, deaths and injuries in 2023.
  • Non-use of safety gear remained deadly, with 54,568 fatalities linked to missing helmets and 16,025 to missing seat belts.
  • Two-wheeler riders accounted for 44.8% of deaths and pedestrians for 20.4%, while people aged 18–45 made up 66.4% of victims.
  • Accidents were spread across road types—31.2% on national highways, 22.0% on state highways and 46.8% on other roads—with Tamil Nadu leading highway crashes and Uttar Pradesh reporting the most deaths.
