India Receives Second GE-F404 Engine, Sets Stage for Tejas Mk-1A Production Surge

Overview

  • On July 15, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited took delivery of its second GE-F404-IN20 engine following over a year of supply chain delays.
  • HAL is slated to receive a total of 12 GE-F404 engines by the end of the current financial year to power indigenous Tejas Mk-1A fighters.
  • The Indian Air Force has firm orders for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets and a proposal for 97 more is under advanced Defence Ministry review.
  • Integration of the new engines will enable HAL to accelerate assembly and begin delivering Tejas Mk-1A aircraft to address squadron shortages.
  • India and the U.S. are in the final stages of a deal to co-produce GE-414 engines for the upcoming LCA Mark-2, expected to be signed by March 2026.
