India Recasts Renewable Push Toward Grid Strength and Storage, Says MNRE

MNRE frames a deliberate shift to grid readiness to meet the 2030 non‑fossil target.

Overview

  • India is still adding 15–25 GW of renewable capacity each year and has surpassed 197 GW excluding large hydro.
  • A Rs 2.4 lakh crore Transmission Plan and Green Energy Corridors, including new lines from Rajasthan, Gujarat and Ladakh, are intended to unlock over 200 GW of additional capacity.
  • Recent CERC GNA 2025 amendments introduce time‑segmented access for solar and non‑solar hours, add source flexibility and stricter connectivity norms, and target faster clearance of stranded projects.
  • More than 40 GW of awarded projects are advancing through PPAs, PSAs or transmission connectivity, indicating a strong committed pipeline.
  • Central agencies have issued 5.6 GW of bids this year, states 3.5 GW, and C&I buyers are expected to add about 6 GW in 2025 as commissioning timelines face global supply and finance headwinds that the ministry calls a recalibration.
