India Rebukes UN Myanmar Report, Rejects Link Between Pahalgam Attack and Refugees

At the UN Third Committee, India cast the Special Rapporteur’s findings as biased, urging evidence-based scrutiny of claims about refugee treatment.

Overview

  • Delivering India’s statement in New York, MP Dilip Saikia said the claim that the April 2025 Pahalgam attack affected displaced persons from Myanmar has "absolutely no factual bearing."
  • UN Special Rapporteur Thomas H. Andrews reported that Myanmar refugees in India were summoned, detained, interrogated and threatened with deportation following the attack.
  • The report also alleged that roughly 40 Rohingya were detained in Delhi, flown to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, transferred to a navy vessel, and that some refugees were left off Myanmar’s coast or deported to Bangladesh.
  • India warned of an "alarming" rise in radicalisation among some displaced persons and cited cross-border crime pressures, while dismissing the report as based on unverified media accounts.
  • Reiterating its Myanmar policy, India called for a ceasefire, release of political prisoners, unhindered humanitarian aid and inclusive political dialogue, noting that UN Special Rapporteurs are independent experts whose views do not represent the UN.
