India Rebukes Pakistan at UN Rights Council Over Human Rights Record

Speakers in Geneva cited watchdog data on disappearances, killings, blasphemy detentions to press Pakistan for remedies.

Overview

  • At the UNHRC’s 34th meeting of its 60th session in Geneva on Wednesday, Indian diplomat Mohammed Hussain called it “deeply ironic” for Pakistan to lecture others on rights and urged Islamabad to address persecution of minorities at home.
  • India framed the remarks as part of a broader pushback against Pakistan’s use of international forums to criticise New Delhi while overlooking alleged abuses within its own borders.
  • Researchers referenced the USCIRF 2025 report noting over 700 people imprisoned on blasphemy charges, described as a 300% year-over-year increase.
  • Advocacy data cited at the session included Paank’s tally of 785 enforced disappearances and 121 killings in the first half of 2025, as well as a Pashtun jirga claim that about 4,000 Pashtuns remain missing this year.
  • UN human rights experts in July urged Pakistan to take concrete steps to prevent extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and attacks on religious sites, while a UKPNP spokesperson alleged security deployments and communications shutdowns in PoJK and appealed for international intervention.
