India Raises GST on IPL Tickets to 40%, Classifies League as Luxury Activity

The change taking effect September 22 will push up out-of-pocket costs for fans.

Overview

  • Media calculations show a Rs 1,000 seat rising to Rs 1,400, up from Rs 1,280 under the previous 28% rate.
  • A Rs 500 ticket would cost Rs 700 and a Rs 2,000 ticket Rs 2,800 once the new rate applies.
  • The reclassification groups the IPL with luxury or non‑essential activities such as casinos, race clubs and betting services.
  • Other cricket fixtures continue to attract 18% GST, and tickets under Rs 500 in those events remain exempt.
  • The hike applies specifically to the IPL, with applicability to other commercial leagues not clearly specified, and it will affect all seating categories from general stands to VIP suites.
