India Pushes Back Green Hydrogen Goals to 2032, Trims 2030 Output Outlook

Officials cite uncertain export demand after overseas policy delays.

Overview

  • MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said India now expects about 3 MMTPA of green hydrogen by 2030, with the original 5 MMTPA goal deferred to 2032.
  • About 70% of planned output is intended for export to Europe, Japan and South Korea, with the balance slated for domestic fertilizer producers and oil refineries.
  • To build local offtake, the ministry is working with the PNGRB on additional tenders to supply refineries and is targeting early uses in shipping and methanol production.
  • Export enablers under discussion include green energy shipping corridors linking Indian ports with Rotterdam and Antwerp, and SECI considering demand aggregation for green methanol from shipping companies.
  • Authorities are reviewing roughly 40–44 GW of renewable projects lacking offtake and plan to reduce new auctions this fiscal year to prioritize project viability.
