India Proposes 30% Increase to Apprenticeship Stipends

The plan ties stipend revisions to the Consumer Price Index for automatic biennial adjustments.

Overview

  • On May 26, the 38th meeting of the Central Apprenticeship Council under Minister Jayant Chaudhary endorsed the 30% stipend increase and CPI linkage for apprentices.
  • Stipends will rise to Rs 6,800–12,300 per month from the current Rs 5,000–9,000 range.
  • The CPI-linked revision mechanism will automatically update stipends every two years based on inflation.
  • The proposal is now pending Cabinet approval before it can be implemented.
  • The council also recommended expanding apprenticeship training to emerging sectors such as IT, telecommunications, biotechnology and renewable energy.
