India Pledges to Build All Warships at Home as Defence Push Accelerates

At the NDTV Defence Summit, Rajnath Singh cast defence self-reliance as a security imperative.

Overview

  • Singh said the Navy will no longer buy warships abroad, with construction to take place domestically.
  • More than 3,000 items once imported are now made in India under the Positive Indigenisation Lists, according to the minister.
  • Nearly 75% of new warships were designed locally, following the commissioning of INS Himgiri and INS Udaygiri.
  • Officials highlighted Operation Sindoor, saying indigenous air-defence modules protected civilian and military sites from Pakistani missiles and drones.
  • Singh said the indigenously built Sudarshan Chakra system is expected to become a reality soon, as defence exports rise to nearly Rs 24,000 crore from under Rs 700 crore in 2014.
