Overview
- The government plans to run NEET-UG as a computer-based test over five to six days from 2027, using about 1,000 centres in roughly 500 cities to accommodate about 500,000 candidates a day.
- A comprehensive restructuring of the National Testing Agency is expected to cover the agency’s organisation, technology, infrastructure and processes and is targeted for completion before October.
- The move follows the May 3 cancellation of this year’s NEET, which about 22 lakh candidates had sat, and a retest held on June 21 after a question-paper leak exposed systemic vulnerabilities.
- A CBI-led probe into the leak is ongoing, officials say arrests so far have focused on lower-level actors such as paper setters and translators, and investigators warn further action if higher-level culpability is found.
- Most proposed centres are to be government-run schools such as Kendriya and Navodaya Vidyalayas, and a formal notification on shifts, test-city lists and other logistics will be issued only after the NTA revamp is finished.
