India Pitches Akash Air-Defense System to Brazil in High-Level Talks

Talks in New Delhi produced an agreement to explore co-development as well as co-production of defence equipment.

Overview

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Brazil's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Defence Minister José Múcio Monteiro Filho in New Delhi to advance defence cooperation.
  • An official Indian readout described forward-looking discussions focused on expanding military-to-military ties and defence industrial collaboration.
  • Brazil signaled interest in the Akash medium-range surface-to-air missile and looked at other Indian offerings including secure battlefield communications and offshore patrol vessels.
  • Both sides agreed to work up options for joint development and production, with talks continuing and no sale or binding contract announced.
  • Akash is an indigenous DRDO-developed system produced by BDL and BEL, already in Indian service, with an export precedent to Armenia in November 2024; further engagement is expected with a planned state visit by President Lula da Silva next year.
