India Pauses Operation Sindhu After Evacuating 4,415 Citizens From Iran and Israel

Following airspace reopening, evacuation operations were suspended on June 25; the government will monitor conditions to determine future action.

Overview

  • Operation Sindhu was launched on June 18 to rescue Indian nationals displaced by escalating Iran-Israel hostilities.
  • By June 27, a total of 4,415 citizens had been evacuated, with 3,597 flown out of Iran and 818 from Israel.
  • The mission also brought home 14 OCI cardholders, 9 Nepali nationals, 4 Sri Lankan nationals and one Iranian spouse of an Indian national.
  • Evacuations were conducted via 19 special flights—including three Indian Air Force C-17 sorties—from Mashhad, Yerevan and Ashgabat after Iran opened its airspace on June 20.
  • Over 1,500 women and 500 children were among the evacuees, and the operation involved cooperation from Iran, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Armenia and Turkmenistan.
