India Partially Implements Sports Governance Law, Initiating National Board and Tribunal

The phased rollout begins a shift to centralized oversight through new bodies for affiliation, finance monitoring, and dispute resolution.

Overview

  • Select provisions of the National Sports Governance Act took effect on January 1, activating the framework to constitute a National Sports Board and a National Sports Tribunal.
  • Recognised bodies, including the National Olympic and Paralympic committees and all federations, must move to executive committees capped at 15 members with at least two Sportspersons of Merit after elections under the Act.
  • The Sports Ministry has permitted National Sports Federations with imminent polls to defer elections until December 2026, pushing contests such as the All India Football Federation vote later in the year.
  • Once fully operational, NSB affiliation will be mandatory for federations to receive government funding, with the board empowered to grant affiliation, oversee finances, and impose penalties.
  • Implementation rules posted for feedback outline age caps and terms for appointees, a forthcoming National Sports Election Panel, a search-cum-selection process yet to be finalised, and a 10-tier athlete eligibility framework for administrative roles.
