India, Pakistan Extend Reciprocal Airspace Bans to Oct. 24, Entering Sixth Month

Monthly NOTAM renewals are pushing Indian carriers onto longer westbound routings that inflate costs.

Overview

  • India’s Sept. 23 NOTAM blocks Pakistan-registered and Pakistan-operated civilian, cargo and military flights from Indian airspace until 05:30 IST on October 24.
  • Pakistan issued a matching NOTAM days earlier that extends its ban on Indian aircraft to the same expiry date and time.
  • Reroutes now affect roughly 800 weekly flight legs from Delhi, Amritsar, Jaipur and Lucknow to West Asia, the Caucasus, Europe, the UK and eastern North America.
  • The impact is uneven, with Cirium data showing about six weekly PIA flights typically overflying India, while Pakistan cited PKR 4.10 billion in lost overflight revenue in a little over two months.
  • India’s civil aviation ministry is evaluating relief for airlines as Air India projects an annualised hit of about $600 million and IndiGo suspends Almaty and Tashkent routes due to range limits.
