India Overtakes China as Top U.S. Smartphone Supplier in Q2 2025

Policy incentives alongside new assembly capacity are driving a rapid shift in where U.S.-bound phones are built.

Overview

  • Canalys reports India accounted for 44% of U.S. smartphone shipments in April–June 2025, up from 13% a year earlier, as China fell to 25% from 61%.
  • Counterpoint Research identifies Apple’s iPhone 16 as the most exported model from India in H1 2025, representing 18% of volumes.
  • Apple made up about 60% of India’s export volumes in H1 2025 and Samsung 34%, with Samsung’s Galaxy A series alone taking 25.5% of total exports.
  • Export destinations diverged, with over 75% of Apple’s India-made phones sent to the U.S. and more than 60% of Samsung’s going to Western Europe; overall, the U.S. received 54% of India’s smartphone exports.
  • Motorola became the third-largest exporter from India for the first time, crossing 1 million units, growing sevenfold, and directing 95% of its shipments to the U.S.
