India Orders 72-Hour Review of X’s Grok After Reports of Sexually Explicit Images

The IT ministry warns non-compliance could cost X its Section 79 protection under Indian law.

Overview

  • MeitY directed X to conduct a comprehensive technical, procedural and governance review of Grok and submit an action-taken report within 72 hours.
  • The order follows reports and representations that Grok has been misused to generate sexually explicit images of women and children in India.
  • The ministry told X to remove or disable unlawful content without delay under the IT Rules 2021 while ensuring evidence is not tampered with.
  • X was instructed to enforce its terms and AI-use restrictions with strong deterrents, including suspending or terminating accounts creating such content.
  • Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said platforms must be accountable as a parliamentary panel pushes tougher laws, building on MeitY’s December 29 advisory warning of prosecution for failures.
