Overview

  • The Chenab Bridge rises 359 m above the riverbed—35 m taller than the Eiffel Tower—and spans 1,315 m across a Himalayan gorge.
  • The inaugural Vande Bharat Express now crosses the bridge, cutting travel time between Katra and Srinagar by up to three hours.
  • Dr. G Madhavi Latha served as the project’s geotechnical consultant for 17 years, pioneering a “design-as-you-go” approach to tackle unpredictable rock formations and slope stability.
  • Built with over 28,000 tonnes of steel, the bridge is engineered to withstand winds up to 260 km/h and major seismic forces and is designed for a 120-year lifespan.
  • Flight crews now announce the landmark during Srinagar and Jammu flights, prompting passengers to photograph the structure from the air.
