Overview
- Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the Kargil POPSK on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, with local leaders present.
- The Kargil POPSK is authorised to accept and process passport applications and is the second such centre in Ladakh and the 457th POPSK nationally.
- Officials say the facility will reduce long journeys to Leh or Srinagar and ease passport access for people travelling for education, work and pilgrimages such as Haj and Umrah.
- On the same visit the Ladakh administration reported meetings with the Airport Authority of India and the Indian Air Force to push for Kargil airport operationalisation while acknowledging unresolved land acquisition and technical-standard issues.
- The POPSK was set up under an MoU between the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Posts as part of a national drive to bring basic citizen services closer to remote and strategically sensitive areas.
