Overview
- The Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday notified new Foreigners Regional Registration Offices in Kohima (Nagaland), Agartala (Tripura) and Bhubaneswar (Odisha), raising the total to 20.
- Home Minister Amit Shah has directed that an FRRO be placed in every state capital by 2027, and the government is pursuing offices in nine remaining states.
- FRROs perform post-arrival registration, issue registration certificates and residential permits, record changes of address or passport details, grant permits for protected areas, and issue exit permits in specific cases.
- The expansion is presented as a response to rising arrivals for tourism, medical treatment and education and as a way to speed services such as visa extensions and local immigration clearances.
- Under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, the Bureau of Immigration will be assisted by authorised FRROs, a change that centralises rules and shifts more frontline service and enforcement to regional offices.
