India Notifies Sixth Positive Indigenisation List for 405 Defence Items

The Defence Ministry has set phased timelines that move imports to Indian suppliers as domestic makers meet technical and quality requirements.

Overview

  • The Department of Defence Production published the sixth Positive Indigenisation List on Tuesday, adding 405 items with an estimated business potential of Rs 3,070 crore that will be sourced from Indian industry once indigenous versions are accepted.
  • The list covers line‑replaceable units, sub‑systems, spares, components and raw materials for major platforms such as Su‑30MKI and its AL‑31FP engine, Tejas, Advanced Light Helicopter, T‑72 and T‑90 tanks, warships and missile systems.
  • Each item carries an indicative indigenisation deadline running from December 2026 to December 2029 and imports will be phased out for a given item only after an Indian supplier meets defence technical and quality standards.
  • Defence Public Sector Undertakings and the Indian Coast Guard will pursue development through the 'Make' procedure and in‑house projects with active participation from private firms and MSMEs, and markets reacted with sharp gains in defence stocks on the notification.
  • The move builds on the SRIJAN portal launched in August 2020 which has offered over 33,000 items for indigenisation and follows five earlier PILs that together reported more than 15,700 items indigenised and about Rs 9,000 crore in estimated import substitution.
