- The Ministry of External Affairs announced that Nagesh Singh, now India’s ambassador to Thailand, has been appointed as High Commissioner to Australia and is expected to assume the role shortly.
- He will succeed Gopal Baglay as India’s top envoy in Canberra.
- Singh is a 1995-batch Indian Foreign Service officer who earlier served as Chief of Protocol at the MEA and as Consul General in Atlanta.
- His prior assignments include roles at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and the Indian embassy in Paris, and he holds a postgraduate degree from the Delhi School of Economics.
- The move follows fresh momentum in bilateral education and research ties, with ministers convening the third AIESC meeting in New Delhi and India approving Rs 9.84 crore under SPARC for 10 joint projects spanning AI, advanced computing, energy transition, MedTech, climate studies, smart mobility, and space.
