India Moves to Default Verified Caller ID as Telcos Launch CNAP Pilots

DoT targets nationwide availability by March 2026 following a phased start on 4G and 5G networks.

Overview

  • TRAI aligned with the DoT to enable Calling Name Presentation by default for incoming calls, with an option for users to opt out.
  • CNAP will display the caller’s KYC-verified name sourced from operator databases, requiring carriers to build and secure CNAM records and reference the number portability database.
  • Implementation will begin on 4G and 5G due to technical limits on legacy networks, and new devices are advised to be CNAP-ready within six months of government notification.
  • Subscribers using Calling Line Identification Restriction will not have their names shown, with CLIR barred for bulk connections and telemarketers as reported.
  • DoT sources say telcos have begun pilots in Haryana, including Vodafone Idea and Jio, and the feature is positioned as a supplementary service to deter spam and fraud.
