India Moves Female Cheetah to Gandhi Sagar as Kuno Probes Suspected Leopard Kill

The move aims to build a breeding nucleus inside a fenced enclosure as officials await autopsy results in what may be the first leopard-caused cheetah death at Kuno.

Overview

  • Dheera, a 7.5-year-old African female, was relocated on September 17 from Kuno National Park to Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Gandhi Sagar now holds three cheetahs—Dheera and two South African males, Prabhas and Pawak—within a 64 sq km fenced area designed for a managed breeding program.
  • A 20-month-old India-born female from Jwala’s litter was found dead at Kuno on September 15, with preliminary findings indicating a clash with a leopard; a post-mortem has been conducted and the report is awaited.
  • Kuno’s current count is 25 cheetahs—nine adults (six females and three males) and 16 India-born—while the nationwide total across Kuno and Gandhi Sagar stands at 27.
  • Officials have intensified monitoring of other sub-adult cheetahs, noting that leopard density around Kuno poses a known risk that is factored into Project Cheetah’s management plan.
