India Moves AMCA Stealth Fighter to Bid Review as HAL, L&T, Tata and Adani Compete for Prototype Work

The evaluation under a ₹15,000 crore prototype plan opens fighter development to private companies for the first time.

Overview

  • A committee led by former BrahMos chief A Sivathanu Pillai is assessing technical and commercial proposals before submitting recommendations to the Defence Ministry.
  • Bids were lodged by major firms including HAL, L&T, BEL, BEML, Adani Defence and Tata Advanced Systems by the September 30 deadline, with Kalyani Strategic Systems also reported among entrants.
  • The Aeronautical Development Agency’s June expression of interest sought partners capable of delivering within eight years, with ₹15,000 crore earmarked for building and testing prototypes.
  • Planning calls for an initial batch of about 120 aircraft with deliveries targeted by 2035, and the Indian Air Force ultimately envisions roughly seven squadrons.
  • The AMCA aims for a fifth‑generation design featuring stealth shaping, AI‑enabled systems, supercruise, internal weapons bays and teaming with unmanned systems to bolster domestic capability.
