Overview

  • The DGCA’s July 14 directive requires operators of Boeing 787 Dreamliners and specified 737 variants to inspect the locking mechanisms on their fuel control switches by July 21.
  • Air India, Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines and South Korea’s aviation authority have already conducted checks and reported no disengaged locks to date.
  • The AAIB’s preliminary report found both fuel control switches on Flight AI171 shifted from “RUN” to “CUTOFF” within one second after takeoff, leading to simultaneous engine shutdown.
  • Investigators identified no mechanical or maintenance anomalies in the Boeing 787-8 or its engines, and cockpit voice recordings captured pilots expressing confusion over who had cut off the fuel.
  • The AAIB continues to decode flight data and cockpit audio as part of its ongoing inquiry, with a final crash report expected by mid-2026.
