India Makes Aadhaar Biometric Mandatory for Subsidised LPG and Sets 25‑Day Refill Interval

The government says the rule will more tightly target household subsidies while providing about ₹30,000 crore to state oil marketers to ease the transition.

Overview

  • From October 1, 2026, Biometric Aadhaar Authentication will be required for consumers to receive subsidised domestic LPG refills at the regulated retail selling price.
  • The ministry has standardized the minimum refill booking period to 25 days for both rural and urban domestic customers, replacing the earlier 45‑day rural window.
  • By September 19, 2026, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG accounts, or about 89.9%, had completed biometric authentication and those users will not need to re‑authenticate.
  • Consumers who have not completed authentication can verify during delivery, at distributor showrooms, or via official OMC apps (IndianOil ONE, HelloBPCL, HP PAY) and should keep their mobile numbers registered for booking and delivery messages.
  • Unauthenticated households will continue to receive cylinders but must pay market rates without the regulated subsidy, and the government has pledged roughly ₹30,000 crore to compensate public oil firms as the implicit subsidy per 14.2‑kg cylinder fell from around ₹721 in June to about ₹210 in September 2026.
