Overview
- India received 268 mm of rainfall in August, 5.2% above normal, pushing June–August precipitation to more than 6% above the seasonal average.
- The IMD forecasts September rainfall to exceed 109% of the 167.9 mm long-period average, indicating another wet month nationally.
- Northwest India posted its wettest August since 2001 at 265 mm and stands 26.7% above normal for the season, with another 3–4 days of heavy rain expected.
- Intense August downpours led to flooding in Punjab and triggered landslides and flash floods in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir.
- Despite the broad surplus, below-normal September rain is possible in parts of the northeast and east, many areas of the extreme south peninsular region and some northernmost areas, and the IMD says monsoon withdrawal is not imminent.
