India Logs 3,981 GST 2.0 Grievances as Milk, Electronics, LPG and Petrol Dominate Complaints

Officials are reviewing cases for enforcement following a surge of price-related complaints.

Overview

  • The National Consumer Helpline has recorded 3,981 GST-related dockets since the Sept. 22 rollout, with 69% logged as grievances and 31% as queries.
  • Authorities have forwarded 1,992 grievances to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs and referred 761 cases in real time to companies for resolution.
  • Milk pricing drew the most complaints, though regulators clarified fresh milk was already exempt and UHT milk is now exempt under the reform.
  • Electronics complaints reflected confusion over rate changes, which shifted TVs, monitors, dishwashers and air-conditioners to 18% while laptops, refrigerators and washing machines were already at 18%.
  • Consumers also questioned LPG and petrol prices, with officials noting domestic LPG remains at 5% GST and petrol is outside GST; the CCPA is conducting a detailed review with potential class action.
