India Logged 4.80 Lakh Crashes, 1.73 Lakh Deaths in 2023 as MoRTH Flags Overspeeding as Prime Killer

National highways emerge as disproportionately lethal, with Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, plus Delhi identified as hotspots.

  • Police data show 4,80,583 accidents, 1,72,890 deaths and 4,62,825 injuries in 2023, continuing a year-on-year rise.
  • Overspeeding accounted for about 68% of crashes, deaths and injuries, with wrong-side driving contributing around 5.5%.
  • Non-use of safety gear was decisive: 54,568 two-wheeler deaths involved no helmets and 16,025 fatalities involved unbelted occupants.
  • Two-wheeler riders made up 44.8% of fatalities and pedestrians 20.4%, while people aged 18–60 accounted for 83.4% of deaths.
  • National Highways saw 31.2% of crashes and 36.5% of deaths; Tamil Nadu led in total accidents, Uttar Pradesh in fatalities, and Delhi recorded 1,457 city deaths, with rear-end, hit-and-run and head-on collisions most common and potholes causing 2,161 deaths.
