India Lists 23 Groups Declared Unlawful Under UAPA Over Five Years

Awami Action Committee is the most recent designation, with the government spotlighting NIA's expanded capacity.

  • Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that the government follows a zero-tolerance policy toward activities threatening national security under the UAPA.
  • Awami Action Committee was named the latest addition, with Students Islamic Movement of India the first in the period and Popular Front of India and its affiliates included on the list.
  • The NIA now operates 21 branch offices and two zonal offices in Guwahati and Jammu, with 1,901 sanctioned posts in total, including 769 added in the last five years.
  • The agency reports a 92.44% conviction rate in 172 judged cases and has 52 designated Special Courts nationwide, three of which try only NIA-investigated scheduled offences.
  • The ISIS Investigation Research Cell has been broadened and renamed the Counter Terrorism Research Cell, while the NIA’s mandate now includes probes into explosive substances, human trafficking, cyber terrorism and Arms Act offences, supported by units such as the NTDFAC, FIRU and the Terror Funding and Fake Currency cell.
