India Launches UPIUPU Link to Use Postal Networks for Low-Cost Cross-Border Payments

India pledges $10 million to build postal payments capacity through the UPU platform.

Overview

  • Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia unveiled the joint Department of Posts–NIPL–UPU initiative at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai.
  • The project connects UPI to the UPU Interconnection Platform so postal networks can deliver faster, lower-cost remittances across borders.
  • The approach targets potential reach across all 192 UPU member countries, focusing on services for families, migrants and small businesses.
  • India signed Letters of Intent with partners in Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America and committed funding for capacity-building and e-commerce efforts.
  • India also announced its candidature for the UPU Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council, as recent UPI outages and NPCI guidelines underscore the need for resilient rollout.
