India Launches Methandienone Long-Term Metabolite Reference Standard to Strengthen Anti-Doping Tests

WADA-validated findings indicate detection in urine up to 19 days after a single 5 mg dose, positioning the high-purity material for distribution to accredited laboratories.

Overview

  • Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya unveiled the NDTL–NIPER Guwahati-developed reference material in New Delhi on September 4, 2025.
  • The targeted metabolite is 17a-methyl-17b-hydroxymethyl-androst-1,4,13-trien-3-one, which WADA cites as a valuable marker for long-term detection of methandienone use.
  • NDTL states the standard widens the urine detection window to enhance testing accuracy and help deter steroid misuse.
  • The material is not commercially available at present and is intended for sharing with WADA-accredited laboratories worldwide.
  • Since 2020, NIPER Guwahati has delivered 12 of 22 planned anti-doping reference materials to NDTL, as WADA’s 2023 data show anabolic agents at 42% of violations with methandienone near 9%.
