India Launches Major Semiconductor Manufacturing Initiative

The Indian government has approved three semiconductor projects worth ₹1.26 trillion, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in chip manufacturing.

  • The Tata Group, in collaboration with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., will establish India's first semiconductor fab in Gujarat, with an investment of ₹91,000 crore.
  • A semiconductor assembly, testing, marking, and packaging plant will be set up in Assam by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test, alongside another specialized chip facility in Gujarat.
  • The projects are expected to create 26,000 direct and 1 lakh indirect jobs, enhancing India's position in the global semiconductor market.
  • The initiative includes a $15 billion investment and aims to produce billions of chips annually for various market segments, including telecom and electric vehicles.
  • The government has also approved incentives for rooftop solar power and critical mineral auctioning, further supporting India's ambitions in electronics manufacturing and renewable energy.
