India Launches First Make-in-India 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Kandla Port

The plant exemplifies rapid indigenous clean energy deployment under Maritime India Vision 2030 by producing roughly 140 metric tonnes of hydrogen annually.

Overview

  • Deendayal Port Authority commissioned the 1 MW Make-in-India green hydrogen plant at Kandla on July 30, marking India’s first megawatt-scale facility built entirely by Indian engineers.
  • The module serves as the inaugural segment of a planned 10 MW green hydrogen project whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bhuj in May and delivered within four months.
  • The facility is designed to produce around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually to support maritime decarbonization and sustainable port operations.
  • Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the plant in the presence of Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, Secretary T K Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and senior officials.
  • Developed by Larsen & Toubro under the Aatma-Nirbhar initiative, the project underscores India’s commitment to self-reliant clean energy infrastructure and its Net Zero by 2070 targets.
