Overview

  • On May 27, the Department of Posts unveiled ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ under the National Geospatial Policy 2022 to modernize the country’s address infrastructure.
  • DIGIPIN provides an open-source, ten-character alphanumeric code tied to exact GNSS coordinates to enable precise location identification and improve service delivery in remote areas.
  • The ‘Know Your PIN Code’ web app uses GNSS location features to let users verify six-digit postal codes and submit feedback for ongoing boundary accuracy refinements.
  • IIT Hyderabad and the NRSC-ISRO consortium collaborated with the Department of Posts to build the interoperable, geo-coded DIGIPIN system supporting Address-as-a-Service functions.
  • A draft digital address policy will open for stakeholder consultation soon, with potential legislation to create a regulatory authority expected in Parliament’s winter session.
