Overview
- The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change formed the COP33 Cell on July 15 under its Climate Change Division to manage professional and logistical needs.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed India as the host for COP33 during his address at COP28 in Dubai, formally initiating the country’s bid.
- Leaders of the BRICS nations at their 17th summit earlier in July endorsed India’s offer to chair the 2028 climate conference.
- If the UNFCCC accepts the bid, COP33 would be India’s second UN climate summit since hosting COP8 in New Delhi in 2002.
