India Launches COP33 Planning Cell With BRICS Backing for 2028 Bid

An 11-member cell will steer India’s logistical preparations pending UNFCCC approval to host COP33 in 2028.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change formed the COP33 Cell on July 15 under its Climate Change Division to manage professional and logistical needs.
  • The unit comprises 11 members, including a joint secretary (Climate Change), directors, consultants and support staff, as specified in the office order.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed India as the host for COP33 during his address at COP28 in Dubai, formally initiating the country’s bid.
  • Leaders of the BRICS nations at their 17th summit earlier in July endorsed India’s offer to chair the 2028 climate conference.
  • If the UNFCCC accepts the bid, COP33 would be India’s second UN climate summit since hosting COP8 in New Delhi in 2002.
